Anyone had gout? I thought it was some old term from the old days.
But my husband had toe pain so severe the other night he went to the ER, they said gout. Our Family doctor confirm it today. He's taking medication and hoping he can make it to work tonight.
Poor guy, it's so painful!

Nasty stuff, gout. I have heard that it's the uric acid from (for example) eating meat. The uric acid forms crystals that get stuck in the joints.

Hope he feels better soon.

I had it once several years ago. Painful is not the word for it. I thought I had sprained my ankle and went to the ER - by the time I got there I couldn't stop crying from the pain. It hurts like the dickens!! Anyway, got a diagnosis of gout. I remember sitting up all night with ice packs on my foot.

Snowmoon-

My husband has gout. He takes a med called allupurinol.

You need to drink lots of water and eat a low purine diet - which hubby never does. Its not just meat, I think its also in certain
vegetables - can't recall, but certain ones are bad. Look up low-purine diet. Since being on the meds, he really doesnt' stick to the diet .

Yes I have had gout...always in my big toe...and yes it IS very painful. Usually brought on by too much pate and red wine....in my case, anyway.. rolleyes.gif I also have RA in both knees, and apparently that makes me more likely to get gout on occasion.

The best thing I have found for gout...is 'pure' cherry juice. It neutralizes the acid in the system.

Gout is so painful, even the touch of a thin bed sheet gently carassing my toe....absolutely sends me over the edge with pain.

I hope your husband has a speedy recovery.

Purines are to blame, not all meats are high in purines.
Food high in purines:
* Sweetbreads
* Anchovies
* Sardines
* Liver
* Beef kidneys
* Brains
* Meat extracts (e.g Oxo, Bovril)
* Herring
* Mackerel
* Scallops
* Game meats
* Gravy
Moderate purines:
* Vegetables: asparagus, cauliflower, spinach, mushrooms and green peas
* Lentils, dried peas and beans
* Beef, pork, poultry, fish and seafood
* Oatmeal, wheat bran and wheat germ
