I have been MISERABLE for 5 months. Blood work showed hormonal imbalance. Dr. first switched BCP to loestrin, saying it may have been suppressing me too much. After two months of loestrin and feeling horrible, I came off and still no period. My doctor now prescribed aygestin (a synthetic progestin) to try adn bring on period and said it will make me feel better. I am totally confused. What if I am further along in meno and shouldnt' be getting periods? Anyone else have similar experience? Thanks.

That's what I was thinking--what if you are actually in menopause, when periods naturally stop? It wouldn't make too much sense to try to start one, at least from all of the meno books I've read.

I don't have any advice, but just wanted to support your feelings on this situation.

Maybe a new doctor would be in order? If this is a gynecologist, maybe you could ask your internist or family practioner.

Thanks for reply. No period yet, but progestin is making me feel a little better. Only thing I can think is that she doesn't think I am very far along into meno from blood work. I love my dr. and she is usually right on cue so I'll let you know what happens

I'm on bhrt.

My doctor gave me a patch for oestrogen and tablets for progesterone. The progesterone can be taken every day, or they can be taken 2 per day for 14 days, then 14 days off.

If taken daily, there will be no period.

If taken 2Xdaily for 2 weeks, then skippped for 2 weeks (called the cyclic system) there will be bleeding.

I suggest your experience may be determined by how you took the progesterone. HTH

Thanks for reply. Do you "how" I took the prog. or "when" in cycle? I am 2+ months without period and dr. said prog. would bring it on. What if it doesn't? Maybe when I stop the prog.? How are you liking BHRT and how long did it take you to get leveled out?

Did your doc mention anything about your endometrial lining? She might be worried that it is becoming too thick. The progesterone would make you shed the lining and alleviate that concern.

I take progesterone (prometrium) daily and still have regular periods.

How do you feel on progesterone and did you start taking it after symptoms started?

I've taken Aygestin for about two months now and it has helped quite a bit.

I have hypothyroidism and when I last had my testing, the tests showed that I needed to have progesterone.

I'm fine with with Aygestin. For me, a chemical is a chemical, reduced to their basic chemical matter, atom by atom, I don't think there is a such a thing as natural or not.

I'd like to take Aygestin for longer than I am supposed to, which is 10 days followed by a period; off for 14 and start again for 10 days, but I assume this is to ensure that the uterine lining gets a regular shedding.

Yes, after its discontinued a period comes within a couple of days. It works like BCP in that it helps prepare uterine lining. When discontinued, the lining sloughs off. Now I am regular and not going crazy with bloating and the rest of it....
