hi ladies, i'm 45, been experiencing all the symptoms most of you have written about - terrible anxiety, skipped/phantom periods, neck pain, headache, palps, .... just a mess of symptoms. but i can't seem to find any posting about anyone suffering from a tight & sore scalp.. i don't know if it's because of the anxiety causing all the muscle tension & oversensitized nerves or what.
anyone has such a sore scalp? please let me know, i would feel better knowing i'm not alone.

kollette,
I had this too, I believe from anxiety and muscle tightness. It comes along with the neck pain, so I think it's from hormones. It does gets better with time.

HRH=hope this helps, LOL. Kollette, i think dry skin has something to do with it too, so I try not shampoo my hair every day, just condition it. I had really bad at one point that I could not wear glasses, this is how skin was tight and sensitive behind the ears. It will get better.

Hi Kollette, I don't know if this is the same thing, but I noticed that my head was sore at the crown a few weeks ago. I was haveing the itching symptoms and when I would scratch the crown of my head it was sore. Its gone now, but I thought it was strange. I am also having a lot of the symptoms that you described in your post.

Well, I don't know if my scalp pain is the same as everone elses but I tend to get it sometme before my period. It feels sore to touch....like swollen sore places....If I press on them or massage them a bit it hurts but feels a bit better somehow if you know what I mean....I get these sore "swollen spots" behind my ears, on the bone there and just above it....does not seem to be related to tense muscles in my case...just sore spots that are tender and hurt....Joan

I have had the sore spots slowbear. That is sort of what I had at the crown of my head this month. I never related it to my cycle, but I guess it could be?

I think it can be related to the cycle, but alo I think that in peri our hormone are fluctuating so I think we can get it at other times as well....and I do! Sometimes it is so hard to tell with these symptoms because of those hormonal fluctuations...all kinds of symptoms can happen anytime...not just around our period (I think!) Joan

Hello everyone, hey Iradan, you were spot on. Guess what, when you mentioned the dry skin bit I realized maybe not just my facial & body skin was dry because of peri, but even my scalp. so i wash my hair every alternate day so as not to dry it out even more, altho the hot water is so soothing. i use jojoba oil - just a little - to massage on my scalp right away after showering & these last few days, the scalp pain has gone away!
I'm so glad to have found this forum & find that we can share remedies that may just work for everyone!
BTW, guess what, my neck pain disappeared on Monday when I woke up. It's the cycle. I've been feeling better, but it's the anxiety that's not going away... still seeking.

Hi Kollette,
My head has had a tight feeling (like I'm wearing a tight cap) for 9 months now....it is also sore in different spots at times when I touch it. I've been through a number of things to help alleviate it but so far no relief. Now I've got pains in my head in different spots daily for the past week or so, especially my forehead. OUCH.....this is so rough - I'm really struggling like you.....in pain 24/7, I'm thanking God that it's not excruciating pain. Let me know if you find anything that works.

Hi everyone..
I have the sore scalp too and at times my forehead feels really tight...like when I try to raise my eyebrows there is a resistance. I have itching too on the scalp and back of my head.
I was told that from muscle tension (from stress or hormones) the neck and back muscles shorten and pull and this creates a pulling of the muscle, skin and fascia on the back, sides and top of the head and even the face. So it is to destress (duh), stretch and if you find those small, sore spots on the head area...they are probably trigger points and if you press on them for the count of 2o seconds..you can get them to go away. I think we also get dry skin in peri/meno so a moisturing conditioner can't hurt.
Just thought I'd throw my two cents worth in...

I have been battling with tight jaw/face/eyebrow muscles for months now resulting in terrible headaches and jaw pain. If I take the ativan, it definitely helps which means that the stress/anxiety could be causing it. I know it is hormonal and am giong to discuss with dr. as to increasing HRT to see if it helps.

I've not noticed the dry scalp problem in the past, but last week I was getting my hair colored, and when the stylist began applying the product, it really started stinging. The color was the same level and brand that I have used for a long time, just a red-tinged medium brown -- it wasn't like I was going for a bleach-blonde look or anything. lol It also hurt when my hair was being rinsed. To my sensitive scalp, the water felt like it was scalding hot, but it was only lukewarm. For a day or so after the coloring, my scalp was feeling kind of tight and a bit sore, but I applied a LOT of conditioner and used one of those at-home hot oil treatments, and it seems to have calmed down.
Everything feels normal now, but I hope this doesn't mean my scalp is going to hurt this way every time I get my hair colored. I didn't say anything to the colorist about the problem this time, but maybe next time I go I'll see if they have something that may alleviate the burning sensation. Unfortunately, I have to use the permanent color in order to cover my roots.
Anybody else had a problem like this?

Hey Wits.....I've had that burning scalp thing more than once in the past.
A few years back I switched to an organic hair color that is permanent yet more gentle than your run of the mill salon type hair coloring system. The brand I use is Naturtint and I get it at my local co-op or Whole Foods grocery.....you can also google it and buy on-line. Having said that, I know you don't do your own hair coloring but maybe you could bring it in to the salon that does and have them use that instead of the other stuff?!
Recently here in Minneapolis we have several salons that are advertising organic hair coloring done in their salon....but I haven't tried them yet as I am well satisfied with my current brand.
HTH (oh, I just learned that today on the posts, it means "hope that helps! Also learned another new word today...ambergris....so I wanted to thank you for that one prof [I'm sure it means whale vomit or intestine but I call it yellow gristle, having broken the word down in my wee brain

Hey Boo:
Thanks for the advice, girlfriend. I'll definitely check out the Whole Foods for the Naturtint. I ran into problems doing my own color because the roots at my hairline got so gray that it caused any red tint in the dye to become grotesquely magnified. lol But maybe I could try once again and see what happens. I also noticed that we have an Aveda salon in town, which supposedly uses all natural products, including hair color. Is anyone familiar with the Aveda salons?

Hi Wits......
I haven't had a problem with my scalp line turning grotesquely red
when using Naturtint product. Does the product you used in the past have henna in it? The reason I ask is that is the only time my greys turned fluorescent red.
My only complaint with the Naturtint would be that my scalp line fades seemingly quicker than the rest of the head, but lately I have been leaving it on longer and of course applying said goop to that part of scalp line first (for me that's near the temples).
As for Aveda....they are a tried and true Minneapolis company that prides themselves on products that are organic, aroma therapeutic. I have mixed results with their products such as shampoos and conditioners but due love their Sap Moss shampoo if your hair tends to be dry....very moisturizing. Have not been to their salon for hair coloring treatments.

Hi there. I understand the scalp problem. Have had it since puberty. Before my period my scalp is sensitive, and I can't wear hair clips, or elastics to hold my hair back or it really hurts when I take them out...also really hurts (more than usual) to comb my (especially wet) hair after I wash it. Also, the pubic hair region is more sensitive. I think it is due to water retention. The hair follicles are more sensitive...I'm also more sensitive when shaving my legs. Try a shampoo with peppermint oil in it. I have a good one that I found at the healthfood store...it tingles and soothes the scalp. Also, shower gel/ soap with tea tree oil (also in healthfood store) is helpful if you have the leg shaving problem...it also soothes and is a natural antiseptic so you don't get as many 'razor burn' bumps.
