Hi everyone:

I just read an article that rhubarb extract is good for hot flashes. They have used it in Germany for years and it helps with other meno symptoms.

Anyone else heard about this?

Hi Mopsy,

Like you, I just read about it on another forum. It sounds very interesting. I wonder where it can be purchased? I remember my
aunt use to make homemade rhubarb pies when I was a kid. Isn't
part of the plant considered a poison? I guess they won't be using
that part of the plant in their supplements. I would like to know
more about how safe it is to consume on a daily basis. I'm looking
forward to hear more about this supplement.

I think it may be the leaves that are poisonous. I know this is about rhubarb extract, which I just read about, too, and would like to try. But I had to comment on the homemade rhubarb pies, icedancer! Excellent! We had homemade canned rhubarb when I was a kid (I know this doesn't sound as good). But it WAS good---very tart, so it needed a lot of sugar. We'd eat it in a bowl with vanilla ice cream. I loved it!

CSugarGrove, this is all sounding yummy! I'm going to buy some
rhubard pie today. Some people don't care for it though. I noticed
the stores carry it frozen too. Ill have to check the nutrition label
on it. It seems it would be very healthy to eat. Except the sugar that
is added. I wonder if stevia would be good to sweeten it with?
My grandparents canned it on their farm.

Yes, icedancer, I grew up with homemade canned fruit and vegetables. Sometimes I think it's a dying art, like home sewing. I don't even know how to can, myself. Women are out there working away from home now, so we don't have the time. When I was a kid, my Dad made shelves on the underside of our basement stairs, and my mother did home canning and stored the jars on these shelves. She'd tell me to "run down and get a jar of green beans" when she was fixing dinner.

Sorry, I think I'm leading this thread astray. My post probably belongs in the "Board About Nothing." wink.gif

We used to make Rhubard sauce. It was very good with ice cream too. I have a bunch of rhubarb in my back yard so I will be eating more of it too. THe leaves are the part you shouldn't eat.

I am pretty old fashion and I still can tomatoes and make my own jam etc. I only have a son though so the art will die with me. My son does like to bake though.

I think I will be going to my health food store to see what they have but I want to read more about it first.

Hi Mopsy, I heard about this too. A 12 week treatment was used with a pill that contains rheum rhaponticum or rhubarb. The research was done with this pill and a placebo. The frequency and severity of hot flashes was significantly reduced in the pill group and the extract does not contain estrogen. So if it really works it would be great for those who cannot used estrogen.

Wow that sounds fantastic! I cant have oestrogen but I dont think I could eat that much rhubarb! It makes my teeth go funny!
Does anyone know what the pill is called and where you can get it from?
I am getting desperate!!!!! laugh.gif

Yes it does sound pretty good. I've done a search on the net and can't find any brand for it yet. Will continue searching...

I just found rhubarb at Vitaminshoppe.com. But I am not going to wait to order it online - I am going by the store tomorrow!

It's definitely the leaves of rhubarb that are poisonous.

My mum used to cook rhubarb when we were young, she stewed it with dates to sweeten it and served it hot with ice cream, I remember it was delicious.
