Just wondering..... In the past, I would have a few night sweats before my period started but nothing too long-lasting. Last night, before going to bed, I had two glasses of chocolate soy milk. ALL night I alternated between sweating hot and freezing cold, all this on the fifth day of my period. I've had the soy milk before, but just a small glass here an there during the day, never a binge like last night. Could there be a connection between the soy milk and the cold/hot flashes? or is this just another weird change in symptoms? Thanks for your thoughts.

Yes, definitely. Soy contains phytoestrogens. Many tout soy as a good supplement during menopause, but it can make things worse. Unless you take a regular, controlled "dosage" of just the amount your body needs, you might exacerbate symptoms. Soy made me feel worse and tripled my "thermostat problems". My doctor confirmed my suspicions. Way to listen to your body, Siaran!
Take care! JC |

Oh yes me too. I was using soy capsules for ages and stopped them for a while as they were making me feel nauseous. I then realised theyhad been making my hot flashes worse and causing tearfulness. I had the same result with the Emerita body cream. I am not a fan of the phytos-they definitely make things worse for me! janet c |

Thank you both for your replies. I feel a bit better about the whole thing. I've not overindulged with the soy milk and it hasn't happened again. Hopefully it stays that way. It would be nice to have at least one cause/effect under control
Now that you mention it, Janet, I've eaten soy stuff in the past from the health food store and gotten nauseous, but I just figured it was me and my usual weird stomach. Again, thanks. |

It does sound like there is an estrogenic connection, or it could be an allergy. There is a suggestion that allergies play a bigger part in messing up our systems than we realize, and soy is very high on the list of allergenic substances. I've been having unexplained discharge on and off for the last year. It was suggested to me by my Accupuncturist in November that I cut back on the soy and I didn't make the connection (since I had yeast at the same time, was eating some soy yoghurt and treated with meds) that this could have contributed to the discharge disappearing for two months. The yeast came back in May and I've been eating massive amounts of soy yoghurt 2-3 times a day (I'm vegan), practically one of those big tubs every day. Just occured to me last night that it could be an estrogenic issue, or an allergy. I know my migraines/cramps responded beautifully to progesterone cream when they took me off the pill two years ago. Dr. just put me on a higher dose so maybe if I cut back on the soy products this will take care of the discharge (presuming it's hormonally related).

Didn't even think of it as maybe an allergy. That makes sense too since it almost felt like I was getting a cold/ flu. Good luck with figuring out your problem/soy issue.. |

chocolate brings on the hot flashes for sure
I'd sooner suspect the chocolate than I would the soy. |

intresting, as I drink Soy Milk in the mornings, not in the evening as it makes me wee, but I thought I was doing good by using it, now will try cutting it out when I am through my stash and see if I feel like my busted internal thermostat cools down some

Hmmm....I'll have to pass this news on to my sister-in-law. She LOVES soy milk and drinks it almost exclusively over regular milk. Her hot flashes are off the charts.

Same here I only drink soy, got to the point I don't like any other milk, my hot flushes are off the chart. I'm now on Remefemin and it's working for now, have to change natural meds every 6 months because my body gets used to them and the hot flushes start again. I wonder if it's the soy, I drink about 1/2 a litre a day.

I've stopped the soy milk over 2 weeks ago, still having hot flushes. I'm on Remifemin which worked for about a month, I can feel them coming back!!!!

I've stopped the soy milk over 2 weeks ago, still having hot flushes. I'm on Remifemin which worked for about a month, I can feel them coming back!!!! I tested a few more glasses since my post and had more night sweats so I've limited myself to 1/2 glass in the a.m. with no problems. I have a high estrogen count anyway so maybe I was just adding to it. Sorry it wasn't the soy for you... :[ |
