I have had completely normal periods for the last 7 1/2 years. I had my tubes tied after my last child was born. I had my period last week. This last Tuesday after sex, I started to bleed. I have been spotting ever since. I have also been having cramps especially on my right side and backaches. I am on no medicines at all. I feel bloated, headachey, and I have to pee all the time. Is this the wonderful start of perimenopause? Or could something else be going on? Should I call my gyno?

I forgot to add that I am 40yrs. old.

I am sure everyone will say it's best to call the gyno and that is true, but the spotting in peri is very common. Mine seemed to start after my tubes were tied. After that, every time I ovulated, I really knew it, and that never happened before. During peri, i would spot on and off from the time of ovulation until my period, so I had one and a half weeks without it. VERY ANNOYING!!!! and scary too. Luckily all was fine and I eventually caved and did bcp's, not really for the spotting, mostly for the other peri things. The pill helped after some time, but took plenty of months for my body to adjust. I hope you feel better soon.

Thank you so much for the response. I have had my tubes tied for over 7 yrs. and have never had this happen before. So, this is all new to me. Thanks!

Dear'sandrak'
I think it definitely could be the start of Hormonal changes.Sometimes bleeding after sex can indicate a small erosion on the Cervix which might need to be cauterised.I know because I am due to have this procedure done due to bleeding after sex and I am Post .Menopausal though still on HRT.

Having said that I urge you to get to your Gyno. and have everything checked out.It is probably something very simple but best to be on the safe side.

UMM! I haven't thought about a small erosion. Thanks! I think I will call my gyno. next week just to be on the safe side because the spotting has been going on for 5 days now, and it is not even close to my period.

Not to make you worry but it could be something besides "normal" peri stuff. I know a woman who'd had her tubes tied and ended up with a tubal pregnancy several years later. It's unlikely to be the cause but your symptoms could indeed fit that situation. It is a good idea to get in to see your GYN as soon as you can get an appt. just to make sure everything is ok.

I had some bleeding after sex in my early 40's too but did not have the cramps or backaches. I had it checked out my my gyn, who didn't seem surprised by this. Said all sorts of changes can start to occur in the 40's. Anyway, it turned out to be nothing. Definitely give you gyn a call. Good luck, JZZ

Hi Sandrak,

I agree with everyone else........I was 32 when I started peri........I bleed sometimes after sex but it usually stops after a day but the cramps and lower back pain for me are completely disabling. I often have to take an anti inflammatory to get rid of the pain.......and my partner and I are definitely NOT swinging from the rafters or anything biggrin.gif I hear how you feel......it is awful. I also vomit sometimes....hhhhmmmm....romantic!! I went to my gynea recently and had to be re-educated on SAFE sex if you know what I mean!!!( I have endometriosis and adenomyosis so that may effect it as well) I have started HRT now at 35 so hopefully that helps. Also, with peri, the natural lubrication decreases so it could be "cutaneous" blood from friction on the delicate tissue of the vaginal canal. Sorry for being so "medical".

I hope it improves for you sweetie.......and you get the help you need.

Thanks to you all! I am pretty sure I am not pregnant. The bleeding is still going on, especially after sex. I bleed the worse then and I spot for days after. I have a normal sex life. Nothing has changed after 20 yrs. of marriage. I have never bled after sex before so this is really strange. Actually, I bleed during and after sex. It isn't because I am dry. I have plenty of lubrication. I don't know what is going on. My poor husband. It doesn't seem to bother him though. My gyno. will be back in the office tomorrow. I will give them a call and tell them what is going on.
Thanks again for the support and concerns!

I wasn't dry either when I had my bleeding after sex issues. Doc said it just can happen sometimes during peri due to hormonal fluctuations. Anyway, just get in touch with the gyn and have it checked out. Take care, JZZ

The flood gates are really open now! It is going to be somewhat embarrassing at the doctor's office today with this heavy bleeding. I told them yesterday that I was bleeding more heavily and they still want me to come in today. UGHHH!

Thank you! I will post this afternoon when I get home. I am sure it's nothing but breakthrough bleeding. Still it's not fun at all!

I went to the doctor and they did an exam. She told me I may have a small cyst but she wasn't positive. She also said that wouldn't be causing all the heavy bleeding I am experiencing now. She said everything else felt fine. They took blood and sent it off to the lab to check my hormones and thyroid. I will hear from that test probably on Friday or Monday. She also checked my iron which was 11.2. She told me to start taking a vitamin with iron for that. I am having an ultrasound on June 9. That is the earliest appointment available. I think they are leaning towards peri or a fibroid. So, now I wait for my blood work to come back and then have the ultrasound. Also, she took a sample of my bleeding and looked at it under a microscope. She saw a very small amount of bacteria, but she said not enough to cause bleeding. I am on an antibiotic for that anyway.

I finally heard from my doctor today. She said my thyroid is normal and my hormone level is a 2. She said that menopausal levels are between 15 and 62. So, I don't think I am starting menopause. I am going for an ultrasound June 9. My doctor said she is leaning more towards my having a fibroid or adenomyosis. I will find out more on Tuesday!

I had my ultrasound today and I do have a small cyst on my right ovary. She said it looked fine though. My endometrial lining is 9.28mm. I am going back in 8 weeks for another ultrasound to see if the cyst has gone away and to see how my lining looks. Since I had two periods in May, I wonder if this is what causing my lining to be a little thick?
