I am 52 years old and about 3 years ago I started to get this feeling where my hands and feet itch. It is not like a itch from a bug bite. It is more like a burning or pins and needle feeling or like I have bugs crawling on me. It is basically on my hands and bottom of my feet. It was coming and going but now for the last 4 weeks it has gotten real bad. When I go to bed at night even though I am tired I can't fall asleep because my feet itch soo bad, get real hot and my legs are very restless. Right now I feel as if I am going to go crazy with this feeling and give myself anxiety attacks because I am so sure I have ms or als or some other disease. I did mention this to both my gyn and gp about this being a sympton to menopause and they have never heard of it and they don't seem to be to concerned about my itching. Does any one ever get this and have you found anything that helps takes this feeling away? Sometimes running my hands under cold water helps but not enough to keep me from going crazy. I still do get my period atleast 8 times a year.

Hi Cherilou,

I do not get that burning feeling in my hands and feet, but I do some women that do. As far as your legs at night, that sounds alot like Restless Leg Syndrome. I have it and I do get pins and needles in my legs and feel like they are going to start doing the funky chicken or something!

My doctor has told me that sometimes low iron could be the cause or too much caffiene, sugar..etc...

I have had those same fears as you, but I just wanted to let you know you are not alone.

I hope you are feeling better today.

Take Care

Sunny~

I had this condition when i was pregnant with my first baby and i only got relief by putting my hands and feet in cold water. The Dr gave me some antihystamines and the problem eventually cleared up.But since i have entered the menopause it has returned but mainly on my feet, it drives me insane in bed at night and i have discovered two things that alleviate it.I either rub olbas oil in my feet or arnica gel.they both work pretty well.I find this happens only at certain times of the month so i wondered if it was hormone related.I hope this helps you.

You need blood work to rule out any underlying cause before you blame your symptoms on peri/menopause. Just play safe.

It could be progesterone levels that are out of balance... My daughter gets the same thing in the luteal phase of her cycle and we have to use Benedryl... I also agree that when I was pregnant I would get this very often, sometimes I thought I was going to lose it! blink.gif

Dear'cherilou'
Please try not to worry as this itchy thing is common to many Menopausal women.Mine was located to my scalp! Was terrified I had lice and got my daughter to check out my head several times.Nothing!but it still felt itchy and burny with a few itchy patches on my legs.Benadryl helped me very much and my Doctor advised me to take some every night before bed.It has helped and I sleep better too.

Many Doctors, both and female, will not admit this as a Menopausal symptom but it is.It makes me crazy that we have to figure out most things by ourselves.

Hope this helps.Don't forget to test if you are allergic to some cleaning products or a particular food.Try to notice if it becomes worse at any particular time.

Hope you get some relief soon
Best Wishes
Elizabeth

Elizabeth I used to take Benadryl for the nasty old cough .. Unfortunately Here in Australia we can only get the none drowsy a lot of cough med seems to be like that.. Due to nasty underworld figures that were making this cough med for this ice for goodness sake.. I take Telfast for all my allergies . My friend recommends perscribed tar treatment, Or from the chemist shelf Derma Veen or Sorbeline lotion. She suffers from psoriasis..

Wow, I thought I was the only one with this problem. I was beginning to get worried.
