At one point I had them less than every hour. It's rough, and night sweats. I still have both every day but not as many.

Hi Eve and Kar,
I have discovered taking Asparagus can relieve hot flushes. While I'm waiting for this to work as with all natural products it takes about a month, Im drinking a tea called "wise woman "tea. It is a product here in Australia by a company called Tinderbox. This can be bought on the internet but you may be able to find a product which is similar. Google both the asparagus and sage tea and see what is said about them, drinking the tea has made my flushes lessen, tasted disgusting, then by day 3 I got used to it. It makes a big difference. if you would like more info please Pm me. I have every bit of 100+ hot flashes a day (sometimes to the point I feel nauseated). Anyone else? Dear Eve Frankly I feel we have all been framed!I was Queen of the sweats. My hair was literally soaked. It got better when I started HRT,but even now I will have the odd one. Try wearing layers.,and toss off as needed as inevitably you will feel chilled again very soon.Carry a battery operated fan and also heard that Primrose Oil can be helpful in alleviating this big hot nuisance. Go the Health Store and see what they have to offer for hot sweats.they will eventually ease up but it does take time.Avoid coffee and anything with caffeine.Squeeze a few drops of lemon into warm water and sip throughout the day it will help the nausea. Good Luck Elizabeth |

Most of this year I have been suffering from major hot flashes, sometimes 4-5 an hour , 24 hours a day. During the day they would practically drop me to my knees with nausea and weakness to the point I felt like I would pass out. I can always tell I'm about to have one because I get a butterfly feeling in my stomach and pressure in my head and nasal area. I dress in layers, always keep ice water close by and fan myself with a battery operated mini fan. I try to stay away from caffeine and sugar as well as spicy, hot foods/beverages. I tried flax seed for a while which really helped, but eventually stopped taking it because it messed up my digestive system. They are miserable! Hope you feel better soon!

Just a wee note to my flushing sisters -
I took Remifemin and it really helped - it took 2 weeks before I noticed a difference, so don't give up too early. It didn't only reduce the amount of flushes, but also the intensity. I took it for 2 years, then came off it gradually and now hardly have any flushes at all - they didn't come back. And - I had no side-effects. If you should try it - good luck! Jonie |

Goodness Eve, 100 a day and I thought I was bad! On average I get them every 40-60 mins and they start with the weird aura and feeling of faintness, intense heat, and a lot of profuse sweating all over. They can be quite wicked at times with the nausea and dizziness as well, although this has lessened. I feel quite good once it is over. I actually went three hours without one yesterday and was quite encouraged by this. By all accounts they do lessen in intensity and duration.
I think some of us just have very stubborn endocrine systems that do not adapt well to change and go into overdrive trying to whip those ovaries back into shape. When they have no luck there they start on the adrenals to pick up the slack, which then in turn go into overdrive spewing out extra adrenaline, cortisol etc. hence panic attacks, anxiety, rapid heart rate and the whole cascade of symptoms we experience in peri/meno. Not to mention the thyroid which has trouble adjusting to all the changes. Phew......... |

At the worst, one per week. Started Friday morning when I awoke. It would be gone by the time I awoke on Monday. Now I use hrt, and as soon as it levels, I'll see about laser treatment for the rosecae.

I'm relatively new to having hot flashes. I had a hysterectomy early this September. I started having hot flashes almost 1 month to the day after the surgery - As if it took that long for my body to realize the lack of hormones. For 2 days, I had a hot flash every 1/2 hour to hour. My first thoughts were that there was no way I could do this without some type of help. After those 2 days, they leveled out to having them once a month for a couple days (almost like having a cycle). I do recognize it is early and hope they dont' get any worse.

I've been having hot flashes for four years now. They come and they go. I've had severe flashes, day and night, maybe an hour apart, for several months. Then I'll get a break and be relatively hot flash-free... then they come back, then they go away... Now, I've been flashing mildly, but am getting them once every half hour or so, including during the night. I've been taking black cohosh for two months, and so far I haven't noticed any improvement. I'll keep taking it for a while though, in the hopes it might help. My wardrobe has really changed since I started all this. I wear a cotton sleeveless top or T-shirt, with a light jacket or button down shirt, something I can easily strip off when the heat starts. I also have a little fan, and I love it! Having a cool breeze on my face really helps LOTS.

Hi - I have been having hot flashes for about a year now too. The worst ones have been lately however because I get so overheated that I break out in prickly heat sometimes. I am worse in the winter too I think because of the forced air. So hard to dress for this weather I find. I get about two to three a day. None today yet...but it is only 8:30ish in the evening.

I'm one of the luckier ones re: flashes. Don't have them often (although I had a doozy today!) Anyway, my frequency is totally random -- I went for 6 weeks one time and didn't have one, and then had 9 in two days. I do notice I have more the week before my period.

Hey again Girlies!
Since I first posted this question MY HOT FLASHES ARE NOW COMING EVERY 5 MINUTES OR SO!!! (AND YES, I JUST SCREAMED THAT AS I TYPED) For about 2 mths or so my flashes have gotten extremely worse.....which led to extreme cold shivers, right to the core! I dress in layers, sleep naked (oh the joy), shower 2-3 X a day...carry cold water with me 24/7..... I guess I'm wondering (since the Doc told me "I'm well into menopause")...Shoukld at some point, my flashes taper off (like the rest of my symptoms have) and finally I'll feel "half way" normal again? Thanks to all! Hugs and Prayers! ~Helen~ |

Hi!
Hot Gramma here. First time responding. I will give a quick background: On HRT since 1987. I know that's too long. Once the announcement 4-5 yrs ago, Dr. started me on weening off. Finally She said, got to quit. Way too long on the hormones, so after all this time, I finally got completely off. (I had ovaries removed in '87). I am so grateful to've found this site! So much info, and ya'll are going through the same things I am. As for the hot flashes, that is my biggest issue right now. Whew-having to learn to deal with those, and the night sweats. I am sleeping with a fan on in my bedroom still, in Dec. Something I am noticing and wonder if anyone else is getting this- I will just be thinking "oh, it's getting COLD" and almost immediately, a hot flash hits! Of course in the meantime, i've turned up the heat, turned off the fan, put on warmer clothes, and got a cover on me. Within minutes (which may actually be seconds, who knows) i'm sweltering again. So I'm gonna try and wait when I feel cool, and realize a flash is coming. As for the length of the hot flashes, at first I actually timed them! I stopped doing that, because I was obsessing too much on the issue. Morning seems to bring more of them than the aft. or evening. But they certainlly wake me during the night! (how thoughtful). I know caffiene is a trigger, but not ready or willing to say goodbye to my morning cup. A.M. they run about 1 every 30-45 min. Later in the day, maybe 1 every 60 min. or a little longer. |

I noticed my hot flashes and night sweats were worse BEFORE my hysterectomy. They aren't so bad now. I have a major one about once a week, nausea headache, etc. I can always tell when they are coming because oddly enough my knee caps start to sweat and then it's on. I'm on estradiol which has helped immensely but I'm down to 4-6 a day where before it was every half hour or so. I have found if I carry a bottle of water with a citrus spritz in it helps. I wear a lab coat so I haven't packed away those tank tops...lol. Just drinking lots and lots of water has helped and I have cut back on my coffee. That was a mood swing in itself!

New here - was diagnosed in March with perimenopause at 37. In the last month, I've gone from hot flashes at night and mild to major insomnia to all day off and on hot flashes and no sleep (or at least it feels that way). I think I have at least 2 hot flashes per hour. Nausea is terrible. Thinking it's time to go back to my doc, since it's been 9 months and the symptoms are worse. I can't sleep for anything. I don't drink caffeine, although I need it badly now more than ever. I don't take a nap with the hopes I'll sleep better that night and run myself all day so that I don't think about how insanely tired I've become. I don't sleep and I even turned off the heat in our house at times, and I still feel like I've got a fever all over.

Dear'billydeel' Welcome to the Forum. You have come to the right place for support, understanding and some great advice. Really do understand where you are coming from as I was prematurely Menopausal too.Had the whole range of symptoms and then some I only got real relief when I began HRT but I realise this may not be your choice nor even work for you. Probably together with your Doctor you will be able to come up with a good plan of action so that you start getting some relief. The insomnia needs addressing as trying to look after a young family on very little sleep will lead to anxiety followed by depression. So now is the time to run all the Tests, including checking out your Thyroid.List all your concerns so that you are fully prepared. Above all please keep coming back here as often as you can Warm Wishes Elizabeth |
