My gyn just prescribed these for me for bad peri. I am totally exhuasted, extremely irritable. I have breast tenderness, night sweats, and cramps. Basically I feel like I have PMS 3 out of 4 weeks of the month. I was taking birth control but it didn't really help me so she just prescribed prometrium and estradiol and I wondered if anyone has had any experience with these, results good or bad? I am also afraid of weight gain. I have all ready put on 40 lbs with this peri and I can't lose a pound to save my life, for the past year I go up and down the same couple of pounds because of all the PMS. Really desperate but afraid to take these meds....Any suggestions would be welcomed. Thank you.

Hi Urs9999,

I'm on estradiol (Vivelle dot) and used Prometrium for a while too. We're all different of course, but estradiol makes a huge difference for me in terms of mood, energy, general wellbeing, being less grumpy and irritable. It didn't make me gain any weight, in fact I've lost a bit probably because I have enough energy to exercise now and don't feel so bad!

I tried the Prometrium and had a hard time with cramps, diarrhea, bloating and irritability. I think the dose was just too high for me at 100 mg. I'm using Progest cream now and that is much better - it helps me with anxiety and sleep. Later in menopause I may be able to tolerate more progesterone than I can right now.

Lots of women are helped by progesterone, though, and you may do fine with Prometrium.

Has your doctor tested your hormone levels at all? Mine did initially but now she tweaks my dose based on symptoms.

I would give it a try - if it doesn't help you can ask to have the dose adjusted or simply stop and be back at your baseline within just a few days.

Sheesh, I am having a hard time using the board today!! Meno moment maybe?? laugh.gif

I have used, well USE actually, estradiol in the form of estrogel and prometrium and feel good on both. However I will say that I did not touch any hormones until I was 6 months without a period. It is a lot harder, I believe, to use hormone replacement when your own hormones are mostly likely all over the place. Try them though, you might be surprised at how much better you do feel.
