Perimenopause after Hysterectomy Options

Has anyone started to go through perimenopause as a result of having a hysterectomy?  My surgery was this last Dec..  My gyn left my ovaries and tubes because he said they were fine, but i also just found out that he pulled them up and attached them to my round ligament.  Is this normal?  I would appreciate any and all feed back on this.  Thanks so much.

Oh, gosh... what the heck is a "round ligament"?  You mean we have to worry about this also?

I'm not sure what exactally the round ligament is, but Dr. Warner emailed me back and said my gyn did it to keep from having pain, and pain from intercourse.

Hi,   I dusted off my trusty old anatomy and physiology book cause this peaked my curiosity.  There are 8 ligaments that hold the uterus in place.  The 2 round ligaments are fibromuscular cords.  From the pic, it appears they are at the top of the uterus and since the tubes are at the upper outer sides of the uterus it probably is common to attach the tubes to the round ligaments.  Maybe a nurse or someone who has had the procedure done will have a better answer, but from basic female anatomy it looks logical to me.                           ~Helen

Once again, thanks for the info.  I'm to the point where i don't have a whole lot of trust in doctors anymore.  I'm just hopeing and praying that i will get thru this very soon.

I have read where there is a 50% chance of ovarian failure when having your uterus removed due to the change in blood flow. With the change in the anatomy they do no wonder there is a blood flow change! I believe you do have to be your own advocate. I have had a full hysterectomy. No one told me what a shock it would be to my body. From now on I have decided that if I consult a doctor about a health issue, I will listen to what he says but then I will do MY OWN research and make MY OWN DECISION!

Thanks for all the info.  I too read somewhere that there was a 50% chance of going thru meno due to loss of blood flow.  I am still wondering if anyone here at this site has had this happen to them too.  Please let me know.  Thanks to all who post.

Hello,I am new to this site, I am 41 yrs old and had a hysterectomy 4 yrs ago.  Left w/one ovary.  My Dr. told me that it would last me 10 years, WRONG!!, I started about a 1 1/2 yrs ago having some hot flashes and vaginal dryness, it has got worse over time and I am constantly having problems with vaginitis, my Dr would give me metrogel to use, it will clear up & come back in no time.  I have alot of problems with concentration and this sounds crazy but I forget things so easy.  Also I have never in my life had weight problems & could eat anything I wanted but for the last 6 months I have gained weight (especially in my hips and thighs) and exercise and diet and can't seem to get it off.  My dr did a hormone test and he says my hormone level was in the high range which could be an indication that I was in early menopause. He put me on a couple of different kinds of estrogen and they made my breasts so sore I stopped them. I told him I wanted the lowest dosage possible and he put me on Menest .03 Mg.  I am in my second month, I have found that I can concentrate better and I have not had any hotflashes (I only had hot flashes for a couple of days in a month before being put on estrogen) Anyway I still have problems with vaginitis. I recently got some L. Acidophilus from the health food store and I am hoping this helps this problem, so far it's still there.  I still have no change in my weight (Just can't seem to get it off). I still have bad headaches. I know this is a long post but I am unsure if I should be taking estrogen, I have read so many things on the internet that says that these same syptoms I have could be estrogen excess and progesterine dominance, and if this is true should I just being taking progesterine? Any suggestions?

It seems to depend on which "expert" you talk to!  I have trouble with progesterone myself.  I take estrace 1mg. and use testosterone cream.  The estrace helped the hot flashes, mood swings, anxiety and some of the dryness.  The testosterone helps the libido problems and the dryness.  I get too depressed using progesterone--worse with provera, but can't seem to even use the mild, natural progesterone.  Other people swear by it!  So it just depends....
