| Love, M.D., Susan
|
Dr. Susan Love, M.D., internationally known breast surgeon, women's health advocate and author of "Dr. Susan Love's Hormone Book: Making Informed Choices About Menopause," says of Power Surge, "It is one of the first, best and most informative communites for women." In her newest book, Dr. Love addresses the issues most on the minds of baby boomers today - how to deal with hot flashes and the many issues endemic to menopause. "The pharmaceutical industry and medical profession have characterized menopause as a "disease," best dealt with by a drug - Premarin, the most widely prescribed drug in America. However, women are not blindly accepting this, not any longer. At least, 20% of women given hormone prescriptions never fill them and 50% of women stop taking them within a year."
In Dr. Susan Love speaks not just as a doctor, but as a perimenopausal woman trying to make sense out of the confusing media reports, complex and contradictory scientific evidence and medical bias. She challenges the notion that every woman needs to take hormone drugs her whole life to prevent disease which may occur later in life. Dr. Love shows how scientists and doctors have overestimated the benefits and underestimated the risks of long-term hormone replacement therapy, such as the risk of breast cancer.
Respected by millions of women for her down-to-earth manner and willingness to tell the truth, she tackles the subject of menopause and hormone therapy with the same thoroughness she brought to her first book, the best-selling, "Dr. Susan Love's Breast Book," called "the bible" by The New York Times, changed the way women thought about breast cancer and helped launch a political movement.
Dr. Love does not stop with her fearless expose of the current situation. She goes on to explore in depth alternative approaches to symptom relief and prevention using the same rigorous scientific approach she applies to hormones. In addition, she provides the tools women need to make their own decisions -- including a detailed questionnaire to help women access their personal health history, lifestyle choices and prefernces, and the validation that they need to realize that can make them.
"Dr. Susan Love's Hormone Book: Making Informed Choices About Menopause" will change the way the world thinks about menopause. A renowned breast surgeon and an adjunct associate professor of clinical surgery at UCLA and director of the Santa Barbara Breast Cancer Institute. She was a member of the Medical Advisory Committee of the Women's Health Initiative, helping to guide the largest study ever on postmenopausal women in the country. | Ojeda, Ph.D., Linda

|
Linda Ojeda is the author of the very popular, "Menopause Without
Medicine." Although noted for her work in women's health initiatives, Linda Ojeda is a recognized authority on a wide variety of issues which focus on the importance of nutrition as a basis for healthy living. She has a varied background of traditional and non-traditional training, education and independent research, both in the United States and the U.K. After receiving her Ph.D. in Nutrition, she pursued a career as a nutritional educator with a natural weight-loss organization,
followed by intensive work with a local medically-supervised weight-loss program.
Linda has written several books - "Exclusively Female," in the early 80's pioneered
the nutritional approach for relief of PMS and other menstrual disorders; "Menopause Without
Medicine," first published in 1989 (with three subsequent editions). The latest version is fully updated with information about natural sources of estrogen, including phytoestrogens; how mood swings are affected by diet and personality; the latest research on hormone replacement therapy [HRT], osteoporosis, breast cancer and heart disease. Ojeda's upbeat approach empowers women, giving them a clear understanding of menopausal changes and debunking negative cultural attitudes about menopause and aging. She thoroughly examines the hormone therapy debate, suggests natural remedies for the issues endemic to menopause.
In the TIME Magazine cover story, "The Estrogen Dilemma," Linda Ojeda is the only non-physician authority quoted. From the article, "Many of the 'alternative' practitioners around the country are suggesting that women seek estrogen from dietary sources. San Francisco nutritionist, Linda Ojeda, author of Menopause Without Medicine, advocates soybeans, which contain a natural progesterone as well as estrogen. Linda Ojeda did her own radio talk show, "Healthy. . . by Design." Recent television appearances include frequent spots on CNBC's "Alive And Wellness" program broadcast nationally through NBC's cable affiliates.
Ojeda says, "Power Surge was a wonderful learning experience. It got me involved in the internet and for that I am grateful. I probably would not have jumped in so soon otherwise. It was also fun meeting these bright, caring women. Most of all, I met you, Alice. For that I am MOST grateful. You have provided a place for women to get the most current info on menopause as well as vent their personal fears and concerns. And YOU, Dearest, are so loved and respected as their fearless leader."

Pamela Peeke, M.D., M.P.H., F.A.C.P., is a clinical assistant professor of medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and a Pew Foundation Scholar in Nutrition and Metabolism. Dr. Peeke is a regular in-studio medical commentator for the national networks and CNN, and has appeared on Oprah, Larry King Live, The View, The Today Show, Dateline, PrimeTime, and others. She is the Chief Medical Correspondent for Nutrition and Fitness with Discovery Health TV and the physician behind their National Body Challenge series and is medical director for the National Women's Health Resource Center. Dr. Peeke regularly contributes to and is quoted in numerous magazines. Author of numerous books, her bestselling, Fight Fat After Forty, presented groundbreaking research describing how chronic stress contributes to weight gain and threatens the length and quality of life after the age of forty, Dr. Peeke has become known as the scientist who first presented the scientific basis of the "stress-fat" connection to the American public, raising awareness about this potentially life threatening medical condition.
Dr. Peeke's newest book is Body for Life for Women: A Woman's Plan for Physical and Mental Transformation. According to Peeke, "women are up to their ovaries in stress" as they try to care give everyone in their lives. As consummate ruminators and perfectionists, women are psychologically hard wired to make their quest for self care even more difficult. Peeke's experience in working with women of all ages proved to her that women have unique female traits that prevent them from keeping both physically and mentally fit. "I knew from my practice that the most successful plan for today's women would factor in the realities of a woman's whole life-the full-time job, the endless care giving, the stress that comes with trying to do it all," Peeke writes. "And, most clearly of all, it would address the issues of emotional eating and poor body image-issues with which many women struggle on a daily basis."

| Pertot, Sandra, Ph.D.
|
Sandra Pertot, Ph.D., is a clinical psychologist and sex therapist in private practice. She has been published in Woman's Day, Penthouse, and many publications in Australia where she lives. Dr. Pertot's new book, Perfectly Normal: Living and Loving with Low Libido, rejects the current notion that a "healthy" sex life means frequent and exciting. Instead, individuals fall along a wide spectrum of interest in sex and low libido does not necessarily mean sexual dysfunction. If you feel like you wouldn't care if you never had sex again, you're not alone. The largest group of people seeking sex therapy is women who feel there must be something wrong with them because they don't have the urgent sex drive that they believe everybody is supposed to have. In Perfectly Normal, Dr. Sandra Pertot dismisses that theory. She believes that there are many ordinary and logical reasons why you might not want to have sex--and provides practical solutions to everyday sexual problems. She doesn't offer a cure for low libido but rather an approach for making your sex life the best it can be with what you've got. In Perfectly Normal, you'll find specific tips on discovering your sexual potential, including how to: Explore your ability to have orgasms, Stay focused during sex, Practice fantasizing, Appreciate your body, Identify what gets you interested in sex--and what turns you off.

| PETA:People For The Ethical Treatment Of Animals |
Dr. Imogene Rodgers ( see her bio) says of
PETA, " As the world's
largest animal rights group, PETA believes that animals, as sentinent individuals, are not
ours to eat, wear, experiment on, or use for entertainment. PETA does not accept that a
difference in species alone, any more than a difference in race or sex, can justify wanton
exploitation or oppression in the name of science, food, sport, entertainment or clothing
or for any financial gain. As a scientist with 20 years of experience in cancer research
and risk assessment, I agree with these positions. "I have heard the tired
arguments of vivisectors that animal rights activists impede important research. This
cherry-picking approach ignores two important issues. Each year hundreds of millions of
animals are maimed, tortured, and killed for worthless research meant only to satisfy the
publish-or-perish syndrome at universities. And animal testing is time consuming and
expensive. Virtually all of the chemicals we encounter in our environment have not been
adequately tested in ANY species. Alternative test methods are cheaper and more efficient.
Had our government spent a fraction of the money it has wasted on the Joe Six-packs of
research, we would have much more information about the safety of our food supply, drugs,
air, and water. Yes, I am a scientist who is opposed to vivisection; in the long haul, it
doesn't make economic or moral sense." |

Others experience violent, outwardly focused anger." Whichever pattern your anger follows, this book provides a powerful set of anger management tools. Cognitive behavioral and attitude adjustment exercises help you limit the power of anger-triggering situations. Worksheets and assessments guide you in an examination of family-of-origin issues that might contribute to your problems with anger. "I'm in Private Practice, with my husband and
several good friends, in Northern California. I've been a medical doctor for 25 years, originally specializing in Geriatrics and teaching (Associate Professor of Medicine...) at a Texas Medical School. After 10 years of that, my husband and family moved (home) to Northern California to do personal, transformational, integrative, medicine and healing. We now are a group of 8 physicians, still practicing client centered, educational, friendly, hands-on, medicine, and having fun doing it in Community. Its probably typically California; we live on an organic farm, raise veggies and sheep (for wool), and produce a few workshops. I believe people can be their own healers if they can find a good model of the process and learn to use it creatively. My interest in Menopause started simultaneously (coincidently) with my first conscious hot flash, aka, power surge (yes!) afew years ago. I'm currently researching the role choices for the post-estrus adult woman -- sort of a cultural anthropology of the future! It's us.
"I loved Power Surge! I'm very glad to participate, and will do so again at your invitation. Always a good time to share with women in the same 'spaces". We'll get it figured out
together, or not at all." |
