Bailey, Covert

Covert Bailey

You've probably seen Covert's expressive face on book covers, video jackets, cereal boxes and television. Where in the world did he come from? Covert got started about twenty-five years ago when he taught nutrition at a community college in California.

In 1975 Covert started the "Bailey Clinic," his traveling fitness show. As his reputation on the lecture circuit grew, his family and friends urged him to write down all of his funny and easy to understand explanations of muscle physiology and metabolism. What resulted was a 20-page booklet called "Body Fat and Physical Fitness". He sold it for a buck in the back of his lecture rooms. That little pamphlet grew and grew until it became a full sized book called "Fit or Fat." It took five years for their gamble to pay off when "Fit or Fat" reached the New York Times best seller list in 1983. In 1984 his second book, "The Fit or Fat Target Diet" also hit the NY Times best seller list. The list of Covert's books now totals seven.

In 1986 Covert was invited to record one of his lectures for a local station of PBS. The show was so popular it was used nationwide for PBS's fund drives. PBS has now featured Covert in two hour long specials and a 13 part series. In between projects with PBS and lecturing, Covert authored "The Fit or Fat Woman," a look at women's diet and exercise problems from his experiences with the five-year operation of the "Fit or Fat" Center. And still he kept writing. In 1990 "Fit or Fat" was updated, revised and released under the title "The New Fit or Fat."

Covert has numerous audio and video tapes. Among his books are, Smart Eating, 1996; Smart Exercise: Burning Fat, Getting Fit, Visit Covert Bailey's Web site.

Bekkar, Bruce, M.D.

Dr. Bruce Bekkar

Bruce Bekkar, M.D. is part of Power Surge's series, Man To Man..."Women and Menopause" to help educate men on the transition their wife and, ultimately, their relationship goes through. Dr. Bekkar, who prefers to be called "Dr. Bruce" is a gynecologist who has written the definitive guide to women's health. It's written for men. Bekkar says he wrote Your Guy's Guide To Gynecology: Everything You Wish He Knew About Your Body If He Wasn't Afraid To Ask" to help the average man, whom he says is "completely confused" about how women's plumbing works. This ignorance can adversely affect relationships, he says.

Dr. Bekkar completed his medical studies at the University of Southern California of Medicine. He grew up in Los Angeles and acquired his dry sense of humor from his father. He got interested in the issue after many of his female patients told him that their husbands or partners just didn't understand. To help guys learn the basics, Bekkar launched a "What's Under The Hood" class at Kaiser's San Diego center. He's been on the Permanente obstetrics/gynecology staff in San Diego since 1989. It's one of Kaiser's most popular classes, with more than 350 men attending since 1998. Bekkar used humor to help guys get over the initial anxiety about this topic. Bekkar addresses the typical guy reading the book in this way: "Most of you probably wouldn't know a Pap smear from a reindeer. You probably think a vulva is a Swedish sports sedan. You know your girlfriend's got PMS, but you'd rather join the Witness Relocation Program than learn anything about it."

Both men and women are encouraged to attend this series together to help them better understand their partners' feelings about this transitional experience.

Ben-Kiki, Joyce Silverman

Joyce Silverman Ben-Kiki

"I was born in Dover, New Hampshire and at 14 years old, moved to Springfield, MA where I graduated from Classical High School, same as Dr. Seuss! I graduated from the University of Hartford in 1968, a very famous year, and taught school in Stafford Springs, Connecticut for eight years. I have been a single mother for 20 years. I moved with my 2 sons to Israel in 1983, where I sold diamonds for seven years to tourists in the country's largest diamond establishment. It was very exciting. We returned to the states where I have taught first grade at the Solomon Schechter Hebrew Day School in West Hartford, Connecticut for the past ten years. I am now together again with my college sweetheart after 22 years. I think that real life stories are the most humorous, and believe me, I have many that I have shared and entertained my friends with for many years, I believe laughter and humor have helped me get through many of life's problems!I My son Danny is a graphic design major at the University of Connecticut, and my son Jay is a District Manager for Blockbuster Video. How could I give my biography without mentioning the most wonderful sons in the world, who also laugh along with me at some of the most hysterical happenings in our lives. I hope you enjoy my humorous and whimsical look at menopause in my new book, "I Love Menopause Because . . . "

And the Clintons are making GP's of us all now. Faculty appointments: Emory, Med. College of Ga (tenure). Hobbies: Languages, Mythology (for my Jungian leanings), travel (to use the languages). He enjoys his Golden Retriever.

"Menopause in my practice is considered as a real entity, viz., it is taken serously. Data regarding the reality of it is finally coming forth, and some more than "adequate" treatments are available, viz., hormonal replacement to slow the osteoporosis and to return the female patient's vascular status to "normal" to cut down the heart attack rate increase; new therapy for osteoporosis; new recommendations for the premenopausal woman who is consider more at risk for osteoporosis to impede it are out; several regimens to diminish the vasomotor symptoms are available.

"The support system that is available via POWER SURGE is certainly a plus. Too many physicians are too lazy or too strung out to discuss the usual questions with the patients, and many patients are too uncomfortable to ask the M.D. about what they feel are trivial questions. This venue certainly offers this service. Keep up the good work, my Dearest!"

The fear that she had almost left her only child, her son, behind as her father had left her triggered her decision to take a leave of absence from her job to examine how loss can be transformative. She was taken under the wing of such leading pioneers in the field as Dr. Elisabeth Kubler Ross, Dame Cicely Saunders, who started the hospice movement. During that time, she interviewed hundreds of other nurses, caretakers, doctors, sociologists and people who have found meaning from loss. Those include Rupert Murdoch,Ted Turner, Steven Spielberg, Donald Trump, Shenia Twain, President Bill Clinton, Mary Higgins Clark and Peter Fonda. Her experience led to the writing of "Don't Let Death Ruin Your Life: A Practical Guide for Turning the Death of a Loved One into a Growth Experience." She lives in Bedford Hills, NY.

Bulik, Ph.D. Cynthia

Cynthia Bulike, Ph.D.

Cynthia Bulik, Ph.D., Clinical Psychologist, is the William R. and Jeanne H. Jordan Distinguished Professor of Eating Disorders at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is also a professor of nutrition in the School of Public Health and the director of the UNC Eating Disorders Program. In their new book, Runaway Eating: The 8-Point Plan To Conquer Adult Food And Weight Obsessions. Bulik and co-author, dietitian Nadine Taylor, shed light on the physical and psychological factors that drive runaway eating and show women how to regain a healthy relationship with food. Their book and plan provide strategies for dealing with problematic eating behaviors, particularly those that affect women in midlife. In understanding runaway eating, the authors examine the underlying causes of runaway eating and address the complex array of factors responsible for its increase in recent years. More and more women, especially those between the ages of 35 and 60, are developing symptoms of runaway eating as they struggle to cope with the stresses of menopause, empty nest syndrome, caring for ailing parents, work overload, and cultural emphasis on youth and beauty.

The authors also explain why some of us are more likely to develop runaway eating, and what keeps this behavior going -- even when there’s a desire to stop. Whether readers occasionally binge, restrict their food intake, exercise excessively, or purge, the authors offer help and hope. Their 8-Point plan for recovery offers simple strategies beginning with identifying the triggers that set off runaway eating, understanding the importance of eating on time, rerouting thinking, transforming moods, alleviating anxiety, defusing depression, finding alternate ways to deal with the factors that perpetuate runaway eating, managing menopausal symptoms and paring down perfectionism.

The difficulty she had in finding this treatment and her realization that women are unnecessarily at risk and suffering unnecessary side effects when using conventional hormone replacement therapy (HRT) galvanized Conrad’s interest in getting women the help they need. She spent three years dedicated to researching and writing Natural Woman, Natural Menopause, a groundbreaking book about the use of natural hormone replacement at mid-life. Her latest book is "A Woman's Guide to Natural Hormones."

Because of her commitment to educating women and physicians about real alternatives for women’s health care, Conrad is sponsoring the Natural Woman Institute and has brought together an extraordinary team of talented people dedicated to the advancement of safe, effective medical treatment for all women.

"For 23 years, I have been a psychotherapist in private practice in New York City. "It's very exciting for me to finally have a modem fast enough to allow me to visit Power Surge. Alice (Dearest), whose online name is very aptly chosen, has been kind enough to share the excitement of the growth of the Surgette movement over the years, and I've found her newsletters and expert advice (not to mention her friendship) invaluable. "During my 23 years as a psychotherapist, I've also directed a counseling center at a radiology clinic for cancer patients and their families, as well as for the professional staff; been co-director of the Urban Counseling Service; been a consulting therapist for an NYC conservatory; where I worked with young musicians; served on the Central Coordinating Committee of the Feminist Therapy Collective (where I was the first male accepted for membership after 51 previous applicants); served on the Board of Directors of the Clinical Sociology Association, and on committees for the Association for Psychoanalytic Self Psychology. I've also consulted to government and multinational corporations, but that's another story.

"So many of the issues raised by the Surgettes are questions that have been an ongoing theme both in my personal and professional life: dealing with the relationship between mind and body, and finding ways to improve our lives through physical as well as emotional paths; facing the life challenges that lead us to ask deep and fundamental questions about our identities -- who we are, where we are going, where we have been; and finally, finding and nurturing the relationships that help us to transcend those challenges and enrich every aspect of our world."
