Q: At 39 I had a hysterectomy because of fibroids and as a mobility impaired woman that was my last pelvic exam too. Now at the age of 50 I have a slight brownish discharge from my vagina. My friend says I need a pap of my vaginal cuff.what is that? if necessary because of my spasticity can I be put to sleep for an exam?

A: Cara:

You should have a brief exam. A cotton tipped application can be used to sample the vagina fluid to make sure there is nothing serious. If you have not had intercourse then a rectal exam should be performed to rule out any lumps in the pelvic area. Anesthesia should not be necessary.

Sincerely,
