Q: I have recently joined weight-watchers because I am about 50 lbs overweight. however, I am a breast cancer survivor of 3 years presently taking tamoxifen and megestrol to control my hot flashes. Megestrol is known to increase appetite and cause water retention. am I fighting a losing battle in trying to lose weight? I will be very frustrated to know that I will not be able to lose weight effectively because I can't control my appetite and or because I am retaining water. I exersize regularly, and take furosemide to combat water retention. what are my odds at losing weight effectively with weightwatchers, 123 success plan.

sincerely,

mary

A: Mary,
You must be a courageous woman to have survived breast cancer and be ready to tackle weight loss. Whether or not you will lose weight with Weight Watchers 123 Success I cannot say with certainty. Medications do play a role which sometimes cant be addressed. However, my experience is that most of the time weight loss can be successfully attained. It may be more difficult and slower than one would like because of the effects of medication, but it is usually doable. I will say one thing with certainty. Your chances of being successful are much higher in Weight Watchers than without Weight Watchers. Continue to give it your best shot and give it some time. You will find what works for you. Please try one other thing as well. As a Weight Watchers member, you have been exposed to the Tools for Living. One of those tools is Empowering Beliefs. Please take an Empowering Beliefs worksheet from your meeting and do the exercise. It is absolutely true that if you believe that you will be successful you are far more likely to actually attain success than if you believe that you cant be successful. When you do the exercise involved with Empowering Beliefs, try to create for yourself the belief that you can be successful at weight loss, of course putting it in your own words. After all, you have been successful in battling breast cancer, a much more difficult and, frankly, more important task than losing weight. In other words, Mary, you can do anything that you choose to do. Youve already proven that to yourself.
